Softening 16 Years of Hair Color for a Natural Grow Out Transformation

Updated: Mar 26

For many brunettes, especially those beginning to see gray hair, one of the biggest frustrations is the harsh line that appears as their hair grows out.

I hear it all the time from clients in my chair.

"Elizabeth, I love being a brunette, but I hate the line when my roots grow in."

Recently, mula. She loved being a brunette and the richness of her color, but over time she began noticing that the grow-out felt harsher than it used to.

Like many women, she still wanted to remain a brunette. She just wanted something that looked softer and more natural as it grew out.

This is actually a very common concern for brunettes, especially as gray hair starts to appear. When the hair is colored with one solid formula for many years, the contrast between the colored hair and the newy long-time client Janice came in with that exact concern.

Janice has been coming yo me for 16 years and during that time we had stayed very consistent with her hair color formula. She loved being a brunette and the richness of her color, but over time she began noticing that the grow-out felt harsher than it used to.

This is actually a very common concern for brunettes, especially as gray hair starts to appear. When the hair is colored with one solid formula for many years, the contrast between the colored hair and the new growth can become more noticeable.

Instead of completely changing her color, we focused on softening the overall look.

I added delicate highlights throughout her hair, but instead of making them blonde, I toned them with soft brunette shades. This allowed us to break up the solid color while keeping the richness that Janice loves.

The result is a brunette color that still feels natural to her, but now grows out much more softly.

This technique creates dimension in the hair, which helps blend the natural growth and reduces that harsh line that many brunettes struggle with.

What I love most about this approach is that it allows my clients to stay true to the brunette tones they love, while also creating a more effortless, natural grow-out.

Interestingly, this idea actually came from a similar transformation I had done for Janices sister Karen. When Janice saw how soft Karens color looked as it grew out, she realized she wanted that same effortless feeling for her own hair.

Hair color doesn't always have to be a dramatic change. Sometimes the most beautiful Transformations come from subtle-adjustments that work with your natural hair instead of against it.

For brunettes who want to keep their depth but soften their grow-out, adding gentle dimensions can make all the difference.
